By-Law and Enforcement Services - Interior Condition of Property

Interior conditions refer to concerns that the interior of a rented/leased property, is in disrepair, such as:

  • Toilets, appliances, cupboards and counters, taps that do not function

  • Flooring, including carpets, wood and vinyl

  • Doors and windows do not open or close as they should, missing hardware or broken.

  • Anything that should work that doesn’t (stove, fridge, dishwasher, washer and dryer, etc.)

  • Insect or rodent infestations (bed bugs, cockroaches and ants, etc) (racoons and squirrels etc.)
This applies to industrial or commercial property where employees are experiencing the same kind of conditions
Tenants should first raise concerns with landlord/property management, if no action is taken then a complaint will be received and the City will investigate.

Exceptions
  • Mould:

    • If the property is rented / leased and is legal and it is the tenant reporting the mould, Property standards will investigate.

    • If the mould is within the washroom due to humidity, the occupant needs to clean it and then make sure there is ventilation working at all times

  • Elevators:

    • You can create a service request for Property Standards to investigate AND

    • Please call the T.S.S.A. at 1-877-682-8772 or 416-734-3300

  • Grow Operation (aka Grow Op):

    • Reporting a Grow Operation- Contact Peel Regional Police

    • Inquiring if property has ever been reported as a Grow Operation – Contact 311

  • Occupancy Standards

    • Number of people living in the house

  • Standard: 150 sq ft per adult and 75 sq ft for a child (under 12)
